Engineering Club Meeting Wednesday, November 23, 2005 Mr. Hoffman’s Physics Lab
I. Called meeting to session – 1:37 p.m.
II. Officer reports
• President: none • Vice President: Father gave him geology books for library • Treasurer: Received $400 donation from Harpster of Philipsburg INC. • Recording Secretary: none • Corresponding Secretary: none
III. Old Business
• Fundraising – Mr. Snyder has been sending letters to businesses requesting donations. We received a donation from Harpster of Philipsburg, and they expressed their support of the club.
IV. New Business
1. Field Trips
a. Received handout of student survey results and discussed them. Decided we aren’t ready for a competition at this point.
b. Discussed club member responsibilities—would like for the officers and other members to take over phone calls and run the club.
c. Discussed and explained Penn State Field Trips—Spirit Rocket, Hybrid Car, Project Showcase (search “challenge x” at google for more information about hybrid cars)
d. New field trip opportunity—Penn State Engineering Open House on Saturday, February 25, 2006.
e. Penn State Field trips could possibly be combined.
f. Took a second vote on Penn State field trip interest.
g. Nuclear Plant – 8 votes
h. Hybrid Cars – 2 votes
i. Project Showcase – 5 votes
j. Need to make contact with Penn State to get more specific information on field trips.
k. Spirit Rocket Update: Mr. Snyder will make contact with the professor and see if they will reschedule with us for mid-January.
l. Mr. Snyder will contact Mr. Matchock about his Penn State touring experiences.
2. Library
a. New contributions almost daily.
b. Dan will donate Science News magazines.
c. Arnold will donate PC Works magazines.
d. Discussed the procedure of signing things out from the library. (Ask Mr. Hoffman if you weren’t present at the meeting and would like to borrow from the library.) 3. Committee Formation
a. Club is now a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). They suggest that we form committees within our club, such as a spending, program, membership and publicity committee. • Program Committee – schedule events • Membership – spread word, recruit new members • Publicity – inform public of events/make posters • Spending – control spending/budget
b. Voting for committee members will take place at the next meeting.
c. Arnold Pelka moves to create committees. Wesley Boyd seconds.
V. Role of mentors will be presented at the next meeting.
VI. Presentation by Mr. Snyder: Lego Sensory Inputs.
a. Reviewed main points from the last Lego presentation.
b. Went over Bricx Command Center code for the Lego robot. Mr. Snyder explained how each part of the code works to make the robot’s arm sweep back and forth.
VII. Membership List
a. Arnold will make an announcement during homeroom to sign up to be an official member of engineering club in room 202.
b. Arnold will make the list for members to sign.
c. Our club has open membership, but we’d like to have an official list of members.
VIII. Other Business
a. Handout—Student Interest In Engineering-Related Books.
b. Anyone feel free to share experiences/projects related to engineering. Talk to the President (Dan) to get on the agenda.
c. Suggested that we buy Lego Mindstorm kits and textbooks. Also a tackle box, extra sensors, batteries, and a recharging station.
d. Dan Bumbarger moves to allow up to $300 to be spent on a Lego Kit, tackle box, and a textbook for the library. Chris Coble seconds.
e. Suggested that Spencer should write a thank you letter to Harpster of Philipsburg INC for the donation.
IX. Arnold Pelka moves to close the meeting at 2:43 p.m. Wesley Boyd seconds.
